Weekends are great for trying out new things. This weekend, I went a Tumblr’n!

Yes, I am talking about that other social media network, Tumblr.

Back in 2007, a small group of bloggers from New York City launched Tumblr, based on the concept of a tumblelog. A tumblelog is a variation on blogs that tends towards shorter stream-of-consciousness posts, often with mixed media. Off the bat, it’s like Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and Flick’r all rolled into one!

It is interactive just like Facebook, facilitates microblogging just like Twitter but definitely good for comprehensive blogging just like Blogger, and shows high-resolution photos just like Flick’r.

Apparently, there are 30 reasons why you should love Tumblr and publicity-wise, it caused quite a stir just last year when famous musician John Mayer announced that he is closing his Twitter account and is moving on to Tumblr. His personal opinion on why Tumblr is better than Twitter catapulted the former’s meteoric rise to online and offline fame.

Here’s a reblog of John Mayer’s post entitled, “Twitter Isn’t “Over,” I’m Over It.”

Last week in Los Angeles I participated in a live Q&A as part of an ASCAP expo on songwriting. When the topic of Twitter came up, I explained my waning interest in it being part of my daily life. By no means do I think it’s over as a medium altogether, but I do think that the days of “Twitter: The Breakthrough” have passed, as has been and will continue to be the case for every online social network. It’s reached its cruising altitude, so to speak. Patterns and templates are showing up. The Twitter-bred syntax isn’t really doing it for me anymore.

And call me crazy, but I don’t think it’s the healthiest thing in the world to read scads of mentions/@replies and effectively open the floodgate of other people’s approval/disapproval. Finding out in 140 characters what a stranger has to say about you is like a mathematical equation without an established value of ‘x’. Who are you, stranger? What do you stand for? What do you like, and if it’s not me, then what does move you? What DO you look up to? Once I figure that out, I’ll know how disappointed I’d be.

This is where Tumblr comes in. It’s the future of social networking if your image of the future features intelligent discourse. I love reading other Tumblr users replies, because they’re thoughtful by virtue of the fact that if they’re not, they’ll bring the intellectual property value of their own blog down, and that’s a commodity on Tumblr.

This post is an experiment in itself. If you want to communicate with me, open a Tumblr account, follow me, repost my blog and then add to it. I’ll follow you back. Agree or disagree, lionize or demonize, but for God’s sake, be original. You’ll have all the room in the world to do it now.

JM

Talk about a major endorsement for free!

My question is: do you think that Twitter is over? Are you on Tumblr?

They are the most watched and talked about people on the planet, and thanks to Twitter everything a celebrity says is now beamed out for the rest of the world to see. For most this may provide the means to maintain their public image or relationship with their fans, but several others see the potential to use Twitter as a means to further their income or perhaps even open new doorways in their professional career. Looking at these star examples below, you can start to see how you might do the same.

1. Lady Gaga

The queen of social media is the most followed celebrity on Twitter and also has a massive Facebook following of 30 million fans. Her first single from the new album Born This Way, was a trending topic for weeks and such a close relationship through social media has resulted in a large and loyal fanbase willing to spend a lot of money on her music. So much so that a reported $10 million was considered money well-spent on the music video for the song “Judas”.

2. The Kardashians

People were shocked when new FTC guidelines forced Kim Kardashian to disclose the fact that she earns money by promoting third-party products through Twitter – up to $10,000 a tweet, thanks to her partnership with the Ad.ly advertising service. Now sisters Khloe and Kourtney – even Robert, their father – have signed up to do the same. And who could blame them, really?

3. Charlie Sheen

After being fired from the show Two And A Half Men, Charlie set up a Twitter account and racked up almost a million followers within a day. He stated his plans to resurrect some form of career primarily using Twitter, and so far has used it to promote live shows, merchandise, third-party sponsors – even a recent musical collaboration with Snoop Dogg.

4. Ashton Kutcher

After the Charlie Sheen controversy, CBS and Two And A Half Men producers saw the potential for using social media to promote a new version of the show and expand their audience – enter Ashton Kutcher, with almost 7 million followers on Twitter. While many were confused at the announcement that he would take over the role of Charlie Harper, the social media aspect was probably the main reason he was chosen. Despite the fact it hasn’t worked wonders for many of his past films, the team seems confident that a weekly show will provide more opportunities to find the right way to connect with their audience.

5. Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi

As a result of finding fame through her appearance on the reality show Jersey Shore, “Snooki” has gained a substantial following on Twitter of over 2 million people – which became instrumental in the promotion of her book A Shore Thing, and enabled her to become a New York Times bestselling author. This has also led to lucrative speaking arrangements, where she gets paid up to $30,000 to appear at nightclubs and other events.

6. Paris Hilton

As heiress to the Hilton Hotel chain, Paris probably doesn’t need to start looking for new ways to earn some extra cash. That hasn’t stopped her trying to make a name for herself as a model, actress and singer – largely off the back of her “online activities”. For the most part she uses Twitter to promote her film and TV appearances, and was once sued for $8.3 million because investors deemed that she didn’t do a good enough job of promoting National Lampoon’s Pledge This! (the claim was eventually thrown out). She also racks up lucrative gigs promoting nightclubs and appearing at product launches – sad to say, she was given $600,000 a few years back for a New Year’s Eve appearance in Sydney.

The Bottom Line

Controversy works, and often integrity doesn’t apply – it seems advertisers are willing to pay anyone to promote their products, regardless of what that person has done, and only care that they have a substantial amount of followers to hear their message. This may be evidenced by the fact there are few big-time stars on this list – many have found fame with the help of a reality TV show or other off-screen antics. If integrity matters to you, then you probably don’t want to follow entirely in their footsteps – but there are perhaps still a few possibilities you can learn from.

Twitter For Business

Twitter is a wonderful business tool, not least because it’s free. All it will cost is your time (and if that’s in short supply, you can hire a social media marketer to manage it for you).

Used well, Twitter for business can provide good exposure for your business, but you can also damage your brand with social media marketing if you’re not careful, so it’s worth learning the biggest do’s and don’ts before you start using Twitter.

Tip 1: Be Yourself and Be Human

The beauty of Twitter for business is that it’s a huge global community of human beings (mostly; there are spammer accounts but they’re easy to spot, block and report). So do show your human side, especially when using your business account. Talk about things that matter to you: funny things your children say, recent achievements, your favorite band or TV show, and so on. Join in with conversations that interest you – be friendly, show emotion, and use smilies if you want to.

On the other hand, don’t be too human. Don’t share anything you wouldn’t share at a real-world business networking event; keep intimate health problems and controversial or potentially offensive opinions to yourself.

Tip 2: Watch How You Write

Some people write well, others don’t – that’s true in all areas of life, not just on Twitter. You don’t need to be a bestselling novelist to use Twitter, but it helps if you have basic literacy skills (and if you use Twitter at the website instead of through a client, your Tweets will be spellchecked as you type anyway – which helps).

However good (or bad) your writing skills are, with Twitter’s 140-character limit you’ll need to be creative with your Tweets. Your Tweets need to be concise yet informative, and often you’ll be trying to squeeze in a URL too (URL shortening services like bit.ly and tinyurl.com are lifesavers).

One definite don’t is using text speak. Text speak is fine if you’re 13, but as a professional adult promoting your business you’re just going to look silly, and won’t communicate your messages efficiently – unless you’re targeting 13 year olds.

Tip 3: Share and Share Alike

If you have some good news – related to your business or your personal life – share it; everybody loves a good news story.

Do share links – to your website, your blog, your local news service, or anything else that interests your twitter for business followers. This is a great way to get conversations going. But do remember to explain what the link’s about, or your followers will feel less inclined to click it. And don’t Tweet the same link over and over; people will quickly become bored and may stop following you.

Do retweet your friends’ links, too. They’ll be grateful, and so will your twitter for business followers if the link is interesting and relevant. But here’s a very big ‘do’ – DO make sure you click the link and read the content before sharing it with your followers, or you could end up sharing a page that’s irrelevant or offensive, or which contradicts your usual position on the subject.

Tip 4: Be Part of the Community

Don’t treat Twitter for business as your personal billboard. It’s not. It’s a community, millions of members strong, and the community as a whole is not very tolerant of users who constantly advertise. Try to stick to the 80-20 rule when you use Twitter for business: no more than 20% of your Tweets should advertise or self-promote, and at least 80% should be non-promotional. If you can get the ratio down to 90-10 or 95-5, even better.

Listen to what people are saying, and join in. Twitter is a network of conversations, so it’s good practice to listen and respond to parts of those conversations that interest you. Don’t just stand in the middle of the room with a megaphone, shouting “I’m fabulous! I’m selling widgets at 20% off this week!” Again, if you wouldn’t do it at a business networking event, don’t do it on Twitter.

Do retweet your friends’ requests for help (for example, charity appeals and sponsorship requests), and do introduce friends that are new to Twitter and could do with some followers. And again – do retweet useful, interesting links from people you follow, but always check links before sending.

Tip 5: Mind Your Language

Don’t use offensive language when representing your business on Twitter; even mild swearwords can put sensitive souls off following you (and besides – cursing in public is hardly professional).

Use Twitter to answer customer questions and solve their problems by all means. Many organizations use Twitter as a customer services tool very effectively. But never, ever use an impolite or impatient tone with a customer. On Twitter, everything you say is out there for everyone to see, so leave your followers with the best possible impression of your brand at all times… the Internet has a very long memory!

Finally – consider this a bonus tip, since it’s not really connected to any of the previous ones. Try to enjoy yourself when you use Twitter. Try to embrace all that’s good about Twitter – the new friendships and business contacts you’ll make, the fun hashtags and trending topics, the strong community spirit – and before long you’ll be singing (or is that Tweeting?) Twitter’s praises to anyone who’ll listen.

Twitter Marketing
One important advantage Twitter Marketing has over Facebook and LinkedIn for connecting with potential customers/clientele is using Twitter search functions.

Twitter Marketing

One important advantage Twitter Marketing has over Facebook and LinkedIn for connecting with potential customers/clientele is using Twitter search functions.

Because Twitter marketing is so open – everything is open to everyone except for the minority of people who lock their Twitter updates, Twitter search functions and third-party search functions can return very robust results.

The FIND PEOPLE Twitter search function

Let’s say you’re looking for someone with a common name, such as Jane Smith. If you go to the tab FIND PEOPLE on your Twitter marketing account and then to FIND ON TWITTER to search on Jane Smith, Twitter will return results for every person whose real name (not username) is Jane Smith or has Jane Smith as part of her real name.

Then even if you are not following these people on Twitter, you can find the Jane Smith you want by clicking on the different Jane Smith profiles.

An important note about this search function: In the name field in your account settings you must have Jane Smith (with the space between first and last name) even if your username is JaneSmith. Without the space between the first and last name, Twitter can’t search, find and return your profile for the Jane Smith search.

I had to change my own real name field to enable people to search for me, and now I’ve been sending DMs to people who follow me when I notice that they are making this same error. (This is just one example of how tiny, tiny things in the online world can affect your ability to get known on the web.)

The FIND PEOPLE tab has three other options besides FIND ON TWITTER:

FIND ON OTHER NETWORKS INVITE BY EMAIL SUGGESTED USERS

Other Twitter search functions

Then there are all kinds of third-party Twitter applications that allow you to search in different ways throughout the Twitter universe. In fact, there are so many Twitter third-party applications that it is impossible to keep up with all of them.

Check out this Wikipedia list of Twitter services and applications to see which ones appeal to you: http://budurl.com/TwitterWikipedia

Twitter search function on your Twitter home page

And perhaps the easiest Twitter search function is the search box on the right-hand sidebar of your Twitter home page. You simply put in topics that relate to your brand, book or business:

You can use the hashtag (#) in front of the topic even though it is not necessary. For example, you can enter #homedecor or homedecor in the search box. Yet if you enter home décor with a space between the two words, your search will yield different results. Thus, if this term is important to you, search both ways.

In conclusion, different applications appeal to different people, and new applications are added all the time. For most of us, though, we don’t have to try out all the applications. It’s only important to use search functions as part of our Twitter outreach strategy. Use Twitter Marketing and watch your business grow.

How To Setup a Twitter Contest

Before we get into the twitter contests and how what we can do to get you started, I want to go over some basics on twitter so you can have a better feel for the real purpose of twitter.

What everyone knows about twitter:

They want lots of followers

They can post micro blogs of about 140 characters about anything

There is a cute bird associated with the word “twitter”

What most people thing twitter is about:

It can make their business grow

People will trust them more if they have more followers

That they will get great backlinks from twitter since it is such an authority site.

Some Truths about Twitter Marketing:

Can Twitter Grow Your Online Business With Lots of Followers?

Anything is possible with twitter and there are many success stories out there to prove it. However, just because you have a ton of followers does not mean you are gaining in your online business. Twitter marketing goes beyond just having followers, you must engage with your followers and give them a reason to seek you out. Do a search for the Conan O’Brian Twitter / Sarah Killen. Read about how his 1 tweet to her changed her life forever! Then think about what you can do.

Will Your Tweets and Followers Equal a Trust Factor?

Sure, if you are some famous that everyone knows beyond twitter, otherwise you could be anybody out there. Again, this comes down to your creative thought and your time and effort into your twitter marketing plan (or have you not thought that far ahead?).

Okay, hopefully by now you are thinking about the true purpose of twitter and how to really use it. Think of twitter like a TV show or Radio broadcast. You have a chance to create a real audience, but not just by gaining in followers and adding funny tweets here and there. You need a way to get people to come back over and again.

Will Your Twitter Account Help You in SEO?

I prefer not to think of twitter as a normal social marketing tool for SEO purposes. First off, the links to your site from twitter are set as”no follow” links. So the clicks count and that is of course helpful to show SE’s that you can get traffic from sites that don’t count as backlinks, however that is as far as it goes in SEO.

Twitter is more Viral if you have not figured it out by now. Viral is similar to spreading germs right! Yeah, you get a theme going with your twitter that gets people to interact with you and now you are on the “viral” road to success.

This leads me into twitter contests. This is a great way to get people interacting with you on twitter, sending out messages to their followers and helping to spread the word about you and your company. Tony Eldridge has put together a complete step by step guide on how to setup an effective campaign. He even gives ideas on how to get products and services donated from other business sites to help conduct his campaigns successfully. Now, you can set up a contest anyway you want, but my personal take on this is if you can give away something related to your business or even one of your products or services you can then generate a way of testing out the level of interest in what you are promoting.

Lets say you setup a contest to give away a brand new set of cloths from your online clothing store. To your amazement 100′s of people want to win this! Well if you have a successful campaign running and have a way to follow up with all the entries you may end up giving away merchandise to a few winners, but you may also gain an opportunity to get more sales from those who didn’t win by offering them a consolation prize of a 10% discount?

Watch this video from Tony Eldridge and if this makes sense to you purchase his twitter contest course!
